Long ago, I heard I had distant relatives that were so poor living in the Allegheny mountains, that they could hunt out of season without concern for the law because it was for their own consumption.
I remember about 60 years ago seeing freshly killed deer carcasses strung up for sale at a gas station in Perth Amboy right next to the Christmas tree lot. Not exactly a Norman Rockwell image but it meant that Santa was coming soon.
