Sure Gorrell, only the woke* give a damn about fair and free elections. You and your Republican buddies obviously don’t. Come on; tell us the new Georgia voting laws were rushed through merely to protect against voter fraud. Come on Bob; say it. Otherwise we won’t believe that even you are that deluded.
Georgia GOP passed a bill, the people didn’t like it, and voiced their objections. The MLB decided to take their business elsewhere. That’s the free market Gorrell. If Georgia doesn’t like it, they can stop disenfranchising voters.
What a bunch of snowflakes these ReQublicans are. They make laws that are against our Constitution, they take care of their own but screw everybody else, but when they are held accountable for their morally offensive behavior, they hold their collective breath and have a tantrum, crying how it’s not fair! Sackless wonders playing the victim card. Nauseating.
Yesterday I listened to a Texas senator in an interview on NPR, insisting that the voter repression law they just passed is perfectly fair to everyone. He made a point of saying that they want every “qualified” voter to vote – specifying not every registered voter. And who decides if someone is a qualified voter? Why the new legal arrangement where the legislature can replace voting officials in any district they please, who can then change the outcome of elections if they don’t like them. So Republican-selected voting officials decide who is qualified to vote. Sure, this decision-making could be applied to everyone, but of course it will be applied to districts with high numbers of people of color or “un-American” names, or any style of Democrat, disqualifying them and removing them from the voting rolls, or perhaps just tossing their votes. You can bet they won’t be notified they’ve been disqualified, if at all, until the day before any given election. More than half the states are passing similar laws – pretty much all the ones with Republican legislatures. It makes me physically ill.
When you allow corporations to act as individuals and make political donations (see Citizens United) you also have to allow them to take political stances and speak their political minds.
It seems obvious that all these cupcake left leaning liberal commentators have no idea what is actually in the Georgia voting laws. Maybe they should take the time to read it and see what the truth is. Forget listening to the lying liberal media. I am sure none of you will take the time to check it out as it is far beyond any of your comprehension. All you can spew is your hate for this country. Have a nice day…………..
I think there are 2 very clear reasons why MLB made the decision, and neither had anything to do with “wokeness”, Mr Snowflake.
1) They saw this petulant response by Republican state legislatures to loosing an election for what it is – an attempt to further gerrymander the election system in their favor – and felt a moral obligation to respond.
2) They further and more importantly saw that a majority of their fans would see it this way too, and would expect them to do the right thing.
It’s funny to see how fast the Gorrells and L Bensons turn against business the minute they pay attention to business rather than towing the R line.
You might like to take a look at what’s changed LATimes, for one, has what imo is a pretty even-handed analysis.
One of the major points is that the state can now take over running elections in some counties, presumably allowing the state to enforce uniform behavior (the law)… but of course there’s nothing to say they won’t enforce MORE draconian rules (my point).
Yes, you cannot give any “gift” to anyone in line or within some distance from the polling place, and the gift specifically mentions food and water. The intent is to prevent influencing how someone would vote.
In fact, the new law requires two weekend days for early voting, up from the one day they were bruiting. But as far as I can tell, prior, there was no restriction at all.
In fact the law requires a picture ID to vote, EVEN absentee (? LAT didn’t make it clear). You may have a free “Voter ID” from the state, but the article didn’t mention what hoops you have to get through to get one.
In fact, the period of time for runoffs is much reduced, thereby much reducing the amount of time for early voting in such runoffs.
And there’s an interesting bit where it appears that members of the armed forces who may vote by mail get a special “instant runoff type” ballot, so they don’t have to vote in a runoff.
MLB is a private industry that can play their game anywhere they want. They can respond to market forces just like any other private company or citizen. Heck, this is just capitalism in action.
If they don’t want to play their game or spend their money in your racist, white, cracker, Jim Crow law loving state, then that’s their choice.
It’s not like they refused to bake a cake for a gay couple, right?
Republicans are now against Baseball and Coca-Cola.
I’d like to see a pie company and a frankfurter company move out of Georgia, so Republicans can be against Baseball, Coca-Cola, hot dogs, and apple pie.
Chinese state media reported on April 1 the extended and expanded TV contract between Major League Baseball and China. (So the MLB must think it’s OK that China is carrying out crimes against humanity and genocide against the Uyghurs? That 21 century concentration camps with over 1000000 people is not as serious as Georgia’s requirement that voters write a driver’s license number or other identifier on absentee-ballot envelopes? (BTW: Ohio, the state where the last All-Star Game was played, has a similar absentee-ballot rule.)
So I guess the MLB will have to move out of New York because New York doesn’t have no-excuse absentee voting and Georgia does. NY offers fewer days of early voting than Georgia, and NY has its own law against giving food and drink to voters.
Another funny way of showing your concern for alleged “voting restrictions” is by moving the All-Star Game to a state that in many ways has voting laws at least as stringent as Georgia’s. To vote in Colorado, a person needs photo identification, just as they do at the will-call window at Coors Field. Like Colorado, Georgia allows voters without ID to use the last four digits of their Social Security number, a bank statement or utility bill, a paycheck, or any other government document with their name and address. Though ID requirements are the provision Democrats hate most, they are broadly popular among voters, which is why they are compelled to use hyperbole and disinformation when talking about the rest of these laws.
MLB’s decision will hurt the very people the league is purporting to support. The game was going to bring economic activity to Atlanta, which is a majority-black city. It would have meant money for hotel and restaurant employees, hot-dog and T-shirt vendors, and other shift workers. Now the game will be in a city with only 9% blacks. #AllStartGameSoWhite
