Actually, when rainfall is very intense, negatively charged electrons are swept down to the surface. When the charge differential becomes too great, it has to be neutralized by lightning going UP to the clouds. Most life on Earth owes its existence to lightning because it created the ozone layer which blocks most of the UV radiation from the Sun which would otherwise kill us.
