Garden Center “Grand Opening” at my Walmart. Nothing really “grand” about it. All it means is that we’re opening the registers in garden center (or at least one of them). We never opened the registers last year because of the stupid virus.
I’m guessing that Annie has the pleasure of tucking in 10 widdle kitties, kissing their furry heads and reading a soothing beddy bye story each time. I’d be glad to step in if she wants to be relieved occasionally.
So, five kittens survived. At least a couple more and their mother were eaten by the coyotes.
For a week or so the five lived under the house, guarded by Alpha and fed by us. Eventually we – and Alpha – managed to get the kittens into the house and safe. Yes, we did keep all of them.
Now, one of them – ‘Chunks’ by name – was particularly traumatized and easily scared. We did our best with him.
The grandson was about three or four years old at the time and a great animal lover, cats in particular. He grew up with another cat, they were almost the same age and did everything together. We had to work to dissuade him from sharing the food bowl with his friend and also that the way a cat cleans himself doesn’t work too well with human tongues. He saw no reason why he and his best friend didn’t have completely interchangeable life styles.
Now comes the odd part…
The little guy would spend long hours communing with his furry friends when he came to visit. He’d particularly concentrate on Chunks. They’d sit on the steps, head to head, for an hour or more at a time. Sometimes he’d talk, as often as not just silent.
Grandson would say “We’re talking.”
We’ attributed it to usual childhood fantasy. One day he told us “Chunks is a scaredy cat. He’s very afraid”
A little later he said “Chunks keeps talking about eyes in the dark.”
Scaredy cat was obvious, Chunks was skittish to say the least. What made us look at each other was the “Eyes in the dark” bit.
He also told us that Chunks had told him that he didn’t like the kibble we fed him.
Grandson also communed with Alpha now and then. Two things he claimed Alpha told him. The first was tale he said Alpha told him was about “Swimming with wolves” – this we put down again to childish imagination (unless Alpha had to swim for his life when he encountered a pack of dogs or coyote – unlikely but a possible explanation.) The other thing he said Alpha told him about was hunting and eating “little lobsters.”
One of Alpha’s favorite hunting food is crayfish. He’s a good fisherman. The grandson had no idea what crayfish were or even that such things existed.
All explicable enough as childish story telling, the “eyes in the dark” and the “little lobsters” were a little less easily explained away.

An Alpha Cat Aside…Continued

That’s the nice thing about being a cat. Any time can be nap time. On another note, saw two robins, twelve juncos, and a wren while out walking today.
