    Once upon a time comic strip creators (and/or their assistants) were required to build up a greater number of strips in advance of publication than usual before they were allowed to go on vacation. I blame the publication of various ‘classic’ strips for allowing the current trends in re-runs.

    I’d say there already are a couple Great American Novels…. I personally recommend A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith; it’s not one of the better known ones (everyone knows about The Great Gatsby, The Jungle, and Grapes of Wrath even if they haven’t read them) but I liked it so much I made sure to get a copy so I can reread it in a few years.
