BIG NATE AND THE BET: Part 9

Nate and Chad searched through the junk pile, looking for the coupon. “Why do you want to ask Dee Dee to the dance?” Chad asked. “Because,” Nate answered, “Francis and Teddy made a bet with me. If I don’t ask Dee Dee, and do one SLOW DANCE with her, I lose Cheez Doodles for a month.” Chad nodded, understanding Nate’s dilemma. After three minutes of searching, Chad finally said, “I think I found it!” and pulled out the wrinkled coupon. “YES!” Nate exclaimed in excitement, “CHAD YOU’RE THE MAN!”

Nate grabbed the coupon. “I’ve got to hurry. Chad, press the button inside my locker. It will clean up the mess.” “No problem, Nate. Go get her, and hurry!” Nate took off, speeding down the halls. Finally, he made it out the doors. “And only one minute left! Where is she?” Nate pondered to himself as he searched the school grounds. He found her over by the parking lot, near the spot where he flooded the place with cream of wheat once. He hurried over to her. “Hey Dee Dee.” Nate panted once he got there. “Hey, Nate. Why are you breathing so hard?” Nate explained that he had something important to do before he came.

“Well, now that I cleared up that, I was wondering if you would want to have some ice cream on me?” Nate said. “Oh! Well, uh, sure!” Dee Dee exclaimed, clearly taken off guard. “Great! Shall we?” Nate said with a grin. They both began walking off towards the ice cream shop. “So far, so good.” Nate thought. “Please let nothing else go wrong.” He looked around, taking in the beautiful scenery.

Suddenly he heard something that made him and Dee Dee stop. “Psst! Nate!” a voice hissed from behind a nearby tree. “Oh no, what now?” Nate thought. Then he noticed Francis and Teddy poke their heads out from behind the tree. Nate excused himself from Dee Dee and walked over. “How’s it going, Romeo?” Teddy teased. “Yeah, give us the update.” Francis said, smiling. “Oh, brother.” Nate thought to himself, rolling his eyes.

Chad was in jail! All the girls at school didn’t want to have a crush on a kid in juvie! “I’ve got to do something,” Chad said to himself one day. “What if I be so kind to the inmates that the guards let me out? Yeah, that’ll work!”Chad casually strolled up to Big Ben, the biggest and most buff prisoner at the jail. “Haha, hi, mister!” Chad said merrily, flashing his teddy bear up at Big Ben. “Would you like to play with me?”Big Ben grunted, then slowly stood up, looming over six feet above Chad’s head. Big Ben reached down, took Chad’s teddy and ripped it in half.Chad began crying in a corner, thinking all the while about his family and friends and most of all…the girls. What’s would he do?“…doing here?”Chad wiped his eyes and looked up. “Huh?” he said.“I said, what are you doing here?” There, standing just above Chad, was none other than Chester from P.S. 38. “You’re such a good kid. Here, come with me,” Chester said, flashing his badge.Chad stared at the badge in wonder. “You’re a cop?” he asked, instantly ashamed of himself for sounding so surprised. Chester chuckled. “Heck yeah,” he said. “I’ve been undercover at the school for years.”Although it was kind of funny that all of a sudden Chester was nice, Chad trusted him. So he followed him out of the jail and to freedom.The next day, Chad walked over to the girls, who were out front of the school and giggling and gossiping. “Haha, hey, everybody! Which way to the playground?” Chad happily chuckled. “CHAD!” the girls squealed, smothering Chad in hugs.So, from that day on, Chad decided that he was okay being just cute.
