Job security is the long haul box for some. I used to like a clean desk top except for the item that I was working. A couple of the film-flam artists made comments about not seeming to be too busy.
I decided to take a quick look at the pile of mess on their desks. There were telephone messages, memos, reports, old announcements etc. that were months old. I remember one con man who would talk to people and in the middle of a sentence look at his watch and always say loudly “Oh no, gotta run..busy, busy.” He wasn’t but he smooched the department head’s moon so vigorously that he got away with it easily.
I left that organization after helping to start a union, but occasionally tracked the changes through the years with contacts. It took years and budget tightening to dissolve that division and get rid of the deadwood that had petrified there.
