I sure did hate diagramming sentences when they had us doing that. I guess there was a little value in it for me: I did learn to think about clauses and parallel construction… though I’m not sure that the diagrams helped all that much. And when we did it, the adverb was on a line that slanted \ ☜ this way not the way Breen has it. I suppose he’s got artistic reasons, though.
PS: What I really learned was how much more than this kind of English I enjoyed logic and math. Though I did and still do enjoy reading well written things.
