I remember buying a book at a bookstore that had a restaurant and having to return it because it had absorbed the fried food smell. That was the first book had to buy online … from Amazon.
I have some independent bookstores that I frequent, but that’s been challenging during the panicdemic, especially that some of them are in other states. But even when I buy books online I typically buy used copies from independent sellers or even individuals. ebay has been a good source, at times, but I have other sources, too. :)
I know a lot of people who have worked in the Amazon warehouses. They are just an American version of the sweatshops where they track your work by the piece — until your body cannot do it any longer, then out you go.
So I do weep for the small businesses (not just books) who cannot compete. There is no replacement for the local hardware store and the personal service they offer.

Do you remember when Amazon was an online bookstore? Ah, THOSE were the days…

Did you weep for the buggy whip manufacturers? The film developers/kodak/fuji? Did you cry for the Atari manufacturers?

It seems a frame from Spielberg’s first movie “Duel”.

I miss bookstores because it was a great place to meet the ladies with the same subject interest as I have.

There truck drivers do seem to tailgate a lot.

Change that to a logging truck and it would be real life.

Don’t see a problem. This is monopoly capitalism and exactly how it works. ‘This is what you want. This is what you get.’ Public Image Ltd.

Ebooks are putting hard copy bookstores out of business. After moving a few boxes of musty books, it’s easy to understand why.

Sears did it first, and over 100 years ago.
