There are a lot of great quotes from MLK that have given us hope and inspiration through these last four years, most notably:

    “A lie cannot live.”

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” (this has been a huge part of the last four years)

“Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.” (this has been a great one to keep me fighting)

“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”

“Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.” (this was has been REALLY tough to stick to)

Makes me think of the discussion between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. du Bois, regarding the direction that African-Americans should take their struggle. Do we take the moderate, safe path, towards a gradual growing together? Or do we demand the immediate equality which is our right?

The Atlanta Compromise was wrong. It is time for whites and blacks to expect, and demand, more from themselves and each other. We must learn to live in Brotherhood.

King was clearly intelligent and well spoken. And black. No wonder he had to be assassinated.

Just watched “I am not your Negro” on Netflix with my daughter. Many of the same ideas in the film as here. James Baldwin was an amazing man and so prescient. Worth a look if you have access.

For those of you wondering, Millard Fillmore. It had me stumped. I’m still not sure why he appears with Dr. King. I hope that Brian will enlighten us. Or me, in any case.

And if you haven’t been there I recommend that you check out the https://www.twopartyopera.com/ site. It’s well worth it. Brian also has an Instagram account. Check it out.

Thought it was Jeff Davis. Filmore caused the Civil War by waffling on slavery. Missouri compromises, West Virgina separating from Virginia, all that.

Nice job on being historically accurate by having Dr. King use the word “Negro”, Brian. The context makes it totally inoffensive!

Thanks for today’s episode. Earlier today I saw a Herblock panel from the time, Dr King referring to “non-violent protests” speaking to a reporter while surrounded with the aftermath of a violent riot, and the white reporter has a look of ‘what do you mean, non-violent?’ on his face. Some pale oldsters like me can look on that and wish to excuse him as a man of good will making a bad call on the situation. But these words hit that nail squarely on the head. Being polite and ‘civil’ in the face of violent oppression is worse than useless. Nearly 60 years have passed since he spoke at the Mall and there is so much left to do.
