“We can’t use those because they’re for company” is on our family crest. My mom bought my grandpa a beautiful Pendleton blanket, and he won’t take it out of the packaging so that she can have it UNDISTURBED when he passes. :/
This used to drive me nuts growing up. Such an irrational logic behind it, it made no sense to me. Now I understand it more, but it still seems so silly to me.
I love my heirloom “good china,” but I’m not an accomplished or avid cook, and don’t give dinner parties where I could show it off. It’s kind of my emergency old-age reserve fund, as I’m hoping it’s worth something.

We had a lovely set of encyclopedias, but we also had a two volume dictionary bound in leather that we weren’t allowed to touch.
