When I was in elementary and middle school here in Florida way back in the ’70s the Hillsborough County School Board had free and reduced lunch for those who qualified by having a certain household income. They gave the kids cards to get the discount at the register at the end o the cafeteria line. I always felt bad for the kids I knew who had these cards because there were always those certain few insensitive kids/bullies in every class who would notice it and use it as a way to demean and make fun of someone they had singled out.
Nowadays the problem is solved as most of the counties here in FL give free breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of income via the Community Eligibility Provision(CEP) Program. Before this initiative was implemented some schools had 80% + of the kids getting reduced or free meals anyhow, so its not a stretch to cover everyone….. Even as the schools have gone online, it has been set up that parents can pick up the lunches at designated grab and go sites and at times this program is also available in the summer to make sure that kids from 5 to 18 at least get a breakfast and lunch everyday. This is one of the few good social programs that Florida has, it is sad that so many people require this assistance as rents sky rocket, wages do not grow much and now the pandemic has really cratered this economy……
Anyhow I feel so sad for the girl who is hiding from Charlotte because she does not want anyone to see her get free food, reminds of those kids who got teased for having to show a card to get a free lunch so many years ago….. No one should feel like that!
