Harley, ask folks what they think of VAT, which is a big part of “fair tax” proposals.

Actually, VAT is not part of “fair tax” proposals.   On the other hand, the only so-called “fair tax” that is actually remotely fair, the one that Atlanta radio wowser Neal Boortz writes books in favour of, has a wonderful mechanism for making sure it stays fair - except that it’s a sales tax proposal, and, in order to keep it fair, instead of becoming regressive the way that a straight sales tax is, it depends on the Government to make sure that everyone gets refunds to make it income neutral.   That is, that very same eeevull Government (and probably that same heinous IRS under a different name) that Neal and his buddies keep explaining can’t do anuything right.   And, better than that, the refunds would be based on the poverty level. Which poverty level? California? Then people in, say, Iowa get too much back.   Use the Iowa figures? Then peole in California get too little back.   National?   Then Iowans get too much and Californians get short-changed.
