When Mom took an old family friend, Evelyn, with her to visit Aunt Mary and Uncle Vaughn, they had fried chicken the first night, and Evelyn started with two pieces. “Hmph – Methodist,” said Vaughan, which surprised Evelyn – she was. It seems that whenever his family moved to a new community and went church shopping, they’d invite the pastor over for fried chicken, and the Methodist pastors would invariably take two pieces.
Before leaving for home, they went to a farmer’s market and Evelyn bought a bag of produce. It was after she got home that she found it had some animal matter in it as well – long, thin animal matter, with no legs, and very much alive. She called Vaughan and accused him of putting a Baptist snake in her bag. He replied that if it was a Baptist snake “it wouldn’t drink, it wouldn’t dance, and it would only take one piece of chicken.”
