Problem 1: Spending without sufficient taxing, especially by tax break without formal budgeting and appropriation. We should move all the tax breaks into the budgets as payouts, thus making more nominal tax and a level playing field for all spening analysis.
Problem 2: Government too big – weakly defined problem. What parts should shrink, and what will be the effects of each reduction.
Problem 3: Financial crashes as the wealthy go short on an economy so deregulated by legislation or lack of staffing that reating of risk are no longer trustworthy, and so juiced by congress and the administration that anyone could buy anything with cheap money – new regulation, but in a not-staff-intensive and not-business-intrusive way, computer-facilitated and simple. Reestablish system as trustworthy.
I have to agree with David. Lack of income is only part of the problem. Yes, there must be some proverbial $50k hammers in the social programs and certainly plenty of bi-partisan pork, but the biggest budgetary issues are in the military. Just by /finally/ getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan would save hundreds of billions of dollars per year. Then there’s the politically connected military contracts for things the Pentagon didn’t even request; ships and aircraft purchased without request because it would be a boost for a well connected Congressman’s district.
There is certainly a sane and sensible solution to our budget crisis. We just don’t have any sane and sensible Congressmen to make it happen.
Does anyone besides me see the irony in proposed cuts (both GOP and Dem) from programs like NOAA and FEMA at the same time as multiple states are reeling from disasters (wildfires, tornados and floods just in the last 2 weeks) and requesting Federal aid? And GOP governors spouting “reduce Federal government size” as they ask for help?
^ Yes. Former MN governor “Tpaw” Pawlenty did that last year. He spent a good portion of his 2nd term building his reputation with the Tea Party and traveled to Tea Party conferences were he made jabs at Obama and federal spending. When some freak flooding occurred, the governor came to get his photo op and promised millions of dollars in FEDERAL aid.
As usual Danziger misrepresents the truth. Being 53 I would be one of the first affected by the plan, not the grandma in the cartoon. If things stay the same I can be guaranteed to have nothing as medicare goes belly up.
