It wouldn’t take much work to make this toon fit the current U.S. political situation: just replace the word “Beijing” with “Trump Presidency”, then, on the umbrella, replace “Hong Kong” with “U.S. Voters”.
Mr. Bednar is quite correct about America being a perfect substitute for Beijing.
I have noticed various pundits referring (STILL!) to American exceptionalism – that NO LONGER EXISTS – America is little if any better than any other two-bit third-rate banana republic that the REAL first-world countries either ignore or make fun of behind our backs!
Please note that Mexico, Canada and the European Union ALL are regulating the number of Americans who can enter their countries because of the utterly pitiful response of the Trump administration to the coronavirus pandemic.

Somehow to me, this looks like Belfast all over again. Or Gaza. Or Lesotho.
“Involuntary Assimilation” isn’t Assimilation at all.
This will lead to an underground movement, one that is intelligent and highly trained. This won’t go like Northwest China.
