    Robert E. Lee was indeed a great general, there is no doubt about that. There is a reason Lincoln offered him command of the Union Army in April, 1861.

    Lee was an important, loyal American for his time. Right up until he joined the secessionists.

    Perspective and context are important. We need memorials that show both.

    Robt. E. Lee was not a bad person, he was loyal to his State of Virginia, and Virginia seceded from the Union. Honor and conscience gave him no choice but to join the South.
