The Army was just as segregated as the Navy. The General would know this.

Only to true, because Black persons were not considered intelligent enough to perform complex operations (we know better now). They were relegated to S&A (service & ammunition) like the Red Ball Express in the European Theater.

This attitude along with pushing to load ships as fast as possible lead to a massive explosion at Port Chicago, California killing 320 mostly blacks who were loading Liberty Ships with munitions.

It is sad to think we could have ever thought that way.

Don’t mistake me as being WOKE or an SJW, I am Conservative through and through, I believe we are all the same and share a common origin. OH, and God did it all.

I can tell you from experience that the cooks onboard a submarine affect morale a lot. We had fun counting the different ways they served pot roast. Yankee pot roast, peppered pot roast, ginger pot roast, Indian pot roast, etc. Funny that they all tasted the same. But they sure did serve a great cherry pie!

Haven’t I heard of cooks getting commendations for manning the ships’ AA guns at Pearl Harbor?

The cook may have been the most important person on the boat.
