The Republicans constantly strive to reduce the number of people who can actually vote – voter suppression is the prime tool in their toolbox of corrupting Democracy.
Now they have a deadly plague to use as their weapon. Along with eliminating most of the polling places where the poor and brown would vote – extending the already long lines and longer waits to vote, and increasing the hazards of catching the plague.
In the meantime, they are encouraging all the Republicans to apply for mail-in ballots. The most egregious states add expensive requirements (like getting the application AND the ballot notarized – equivalent to the illegal poll taxes that they used to use to keep poor brown folks from voting). Texas is even threatening to criminally prosecute anyone who requests an absentee ballot because of fear of catching Covid19.
Thankfully, just LAST YEAR, Pennsylvania changed it’s laws to on-demand absentee balloting, with automatic re-up so you only have to request once in perpetuity, and not for every blessed election. How did they know?!
Normally I like going to vote in person on election day – and I have done so for every election (even the off-year local-only elections) for over 20 years. But this time why increase my risks of exposure?! I’m votin’ by mail, baby!
