Annette Funicello was 22 years old by the time this strip was created. She had been a Disney child actress and one of the original Mouseketeers. Which sort of makes her something of the Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan of her era, but without the crazy scandals.

Like a lot of kids that grew up in the 60’s, Linus was probably an avid viewer of “The Mickey Mouse Club” but wasn’t aware that they were all reruns dating from 1955 to 1959. So yes, it would have come as a shock that his crush was now too old for him.
