I had a Japanese friend a few years back who took a two week trip home to visit family.
During that two weeks, she saw her father for about 3 hours on one afternoon.
Then, he had to go back to work.
He came home every night after the rest of the family had gone to bed, ate the dinner her mom left for him & slept for a few hours, then, got up, showered, and was off to work every morning before anyone else in the house was awake.
Did you ever see the magazine MangaJin? It was aimed at Students of Japanese Language and used pages from popular Manga to teach.
One page would have the Manga as published in Japan, the Facing page would have both Literal & Colloquial translations of the dialogue with cultural notes to clarify what was happening. I believe it went for 32 issues before the people doing it ran out of money. They were headquartered in Atlanta, If I remember correctly.
There were also articles about Japanese culture, popular events and the various customs surrounding things like festivals & holidays. And, of course, Classified Ads selling Japanese Stuff. I even met someone who got a job with one of the Anime companies by responding to a job posting in the magazine at a time when they were running short of Animators in Japan.
