I’m getting aggravated by the amount of people who complain about the motorcyclist community just because the outlaws are the most prominent. The “1%” in the motorcyclist community stands for the outsiders who refuse to comply with the rules established by the American Motorcyclist Association, and it is often these outlaws who are perceived by people as what bikers are supposed to be. As Reggie Rock Bythewood, in his criminally underappreciated classic film “Biker Boyz” tried to prove, sometimes law-abiding civilians just need the adrenaline. I’m a motorcyclist and a college professor – I and most of my bros teach in India, while some of my other bros are journalists and one’s even a bank employee.
As a motorcyclist (my busted leg notwithstanding), I can argue that the need to vent is what drives most of us to drive alone, because we find it easier to vent our feelings than address them – understandably, since while feeling our minds are usually pulled away from the ability to reason and think clearly. This cloud must be allowed to dissipate before rational thought can be returned to. Most “bikers” don’t have enough mind to see this, which is why they do rather than talk. This is why men form attachments to things rather than people, particularly with vehicles – they become essentially non-living though fully responsive pets, and I don’t need to explain that many people unconsciously use pets to prepare themselves for children.
So, yes, all motorcyclists (and by this I mean TRUE motorcyclists, NOT outlaw bikers) are not criminals – in fact, we’re getting tired of the abuse we’re getting from civilians. In India, many places are often only reachable by motorcycle, and motorcycles are often more affordable than cars, so they’re more common. One of my bros joined the Teach For India programme, and now he teaches underprivileged children in rural areas that he can only reach by motorcycle.
