I do love all the ape comments. Sad to think that is how many apes were kept in zoos for years and years.

There’s a set of short stories in “The Magical Monarch of Mo” by L Frank Baum (who also wrote the Oz books), and in one story a boy flying an oversized kite is blown into a land of civilized monkeys. They capture him and put him in a zoo, in a big strong cage. He gets thinner over time, and when the monkeys are distracted he manages to slip between the big bars and escape back to where he left his kite. This was published in 1903.

You’re think such an amazing artist… maybe the best in comicdom (?)… could anticipate the dialogue well enough to fit it all in. A master of perspective and he runs out of space. The “THINK AHEAd” guy of the era.Nevertheless, the best.

The writer of “Planet Of The Apes” must have been a “Little Nemo in Slumberland” fan.
