Oof, Slumberland had slavery (panel 1 banner, right below Nemo’s name) in 1908? Is too much to hope that they’ll be freed before the end of the series?
I’m not up in arms, historical context is everything. So much of our educational system (when I was growing up) had focused on “in 1865, all slavery and racism ended.” I don’t mind seeing stuff like this here because it’s a good reminder that, no, the struggles continued. And still do. Watchmen and Lovecraft Country shed the light on the 1921 Tulsa Massacre, which wasn’t in the Oklahoma state history curriculum until….2020!
Those who do not learn (and learn from) history are doomed to repeat it. We forget the atrocities humans are capable of and fall back into the same patterns.
