Deanna: There's a new boy on our team who Katie has had trouble with. Gary: Boy trouble? For our little Katie? Deanna: He pulls her hair at school. Gary: Sounds like a crisis you can handle, coach. He's only doing it because he likes her. Deanna: Ouch!

Please, Bill Hinds, tell me your Coach character is called out for perpetuating this myth! Violence and aggression are not signs of love and affection and should never be portrayed as such.

I would say that Gary is a bit of an old fashioned kind of guy. So, his assumption that a boy bullies Katie as a sign of love is very outdated and inaccurate. If he was more progressive, he would confront that bully and tell him to stay away from his sweet little princess.

This is a very progressive strip. Gary is assuming that the bully is in love with Katie, despite evidence that states otherwise and Deena is very angry at him for perpetuating that ideal. The strip is acknowledging that the whole “Loving Bully” trope is pretty much dead at this point and keep in mind, this was made back in the 2000s. Not bad, Bill. Not bad at all.
