The best piece of advice I have for young referees is that you will never call a perfect game. I refereed for 20 years from micro soccer up through adult amateur, high school and college. I associated with some very talented referees, some that have FIFA ratings which are the highest in the world. Post game there are always doubts. Did I see it right in this instance? Would I have been in better position if I had been in this area rather than that area? Was my diagonal too flat? Could I have managed the situation differently and not carded that player? When everything revolves around “in the opinion of the referee” there is always room for self-improvement. One more thing, referees are human, they have good games and bad games. The best comment I ever heard to a coach from a State 1 referee was “if you think that was bad, you should have seen me last game”.
