“Forgive me ma’am, but I have an awful feeling that may be an emergency!” That I how I read it the first time. I must have been skimming.

Maybe he caught Cheshire Beagle Syndrome from his dog. If you look at the first panel, the jagged stripe on his shirt disappeared.
