My mom was a teacher, and, with some bias, a very good one. She always considered the “outliers” in her classes. Set up things to handle the “slower than normal”, “normal” and “brighter than normal”. Giving each tasks to fit their abilities. She often had the “normal” children help the “slower than normal” children – worked out very well as it help solidify the knowledge of “normal” children by having them explain the lessons to the “slower” children. For the “brighter than normal” children, she would do things like give them the new teacher’s math guide book and have them critique it, doing a research paper style review. Find errors in the book or the answers and explain why it was wrong and what should be done to fix it. Or do book reviews of books way above their supposed grade level, that kind of thing. This was for 5th graders. Her kids – all of them – passed their standardized tests by the end of the school year and moved up to the next grade. The main thing she did was teach them how to THINK. She was amazing.
