Haven’t watched an NBA game on TV since the 2013 finals and I used to eat, drink and sleep the NBA. I do support the WNBA, watch a game when I can (especially when Breanna Stewart’s playing) and hope they succeed.
The thing is, they SHOULD be succeeding: Forbes reports that ESPN pays $25 million a year to broadcast their game ($2 million+ per team), they drew 6,500+ per game league-wide at an average of about $17 per ticket ($1.9 million per team per season). That’s $4 million a year (not including sponsorships, merch and concession sales) for teams with a $996,000 salary cap. How are they LOSING money?
When your revenues are at least four times as much as your player payroll (your largest expense), you don’t have a revenue problem…you have a spending problem.
