Daddy Longlegs or Granddaddy Longlegs as we called them when I was growing up, are Opiliones, an order of arachnids colloquially known as harvestmen. tcayer is correct in that they aren’t spiders but they are arachnids, along with mites and ticks. They do not have a distinct abdomen as do spiders, nor do they sport multiple pairs of eyes. (they’re still creepy, to my mind – even with the endearing name, however.)
