The coarsening of discourse is not entirely trump’s fault, of course. But his psychopathy has served as a catalyst for others to vent their frustrations.
On the right, the coarseness has a mob mentality to it. They seek to offend others in their slavish echoing of the psychopath’s deeply embedded insanity. When trump does it, he’s trying to get more positive attention from his followers. That’s his mental illness talking. When his synchophants do it, it’s because they have become infected by trump’s virulent social virus. That’s also an illness—or, more accurately, a contagion.
On the left, mostly it’s a reaction to trump’s psychopathic malignant narcissism. It’s hard for many to otherwise express a full measure of disgust, disappointment, and outrage.
As a leader in culture.. America has led in coarsening the language. There used to be a place for cursing and never in front of the fairer sex. Now.. perhaps because the fairer sex is no more.. cursing is everywhere. Sad
Hearing Beto curse last week must’ve given Steve a serious case of the vapors! Why can’t our politicians engage in more civilized discourse, like how to make our border concentration camps more like Abu Ghraib!
Define “cursing”. Is it bathroom words? Gender words? Religion words? Every society has markers that it uses to divide folks into upper and lower categories, and speech is a big arena for that. And every society changes. If more of us are comfortable using words that gramma would have found terribly offensive, then I’m quite sure that there are other language mechanisms being used to maintain (or at least define new) boundaries. Maybe pronunciation patterns, or vocabulary choice other than in an expletive.

See? It’s not so hard to draw a cartoon that’s not completely misleading or devoid of facts.

Yes, the politicians can drive us to it because of the stupid policies they push. I swear at least 45 times more than I did 10 years ago
