Didn’t realise there were tigers in northern Africa (or Africa at all), what’s wrong with lions? But I’m being picky. :-|

@ fennec: I’m familiar with “paper tigers” but not the expression “ride a tiger”. Live & learn ;-)

Shah has done more for Iran than anybody, since Persia was overrun by the Arabs and Muslimized (636 AD).

He was dragging Iran kicking and screaming into Modernity, and yes, he was brutal with his opponents, particularly with those that wanted to drag Iran back to the 7th century.

Apparently he was not brutal enough as he let too many militant Muslims get away, and we know the rest … .

So you like brutal dictators, petergrt? Explains a lot. You know, since we supported a lot of these horrible people, we might have tried to influence them for the better. But we didn’t. Now we are identified as the enemy by most of the people who were oppressed, and the “militant Muslims” are welcomed as protectors of the people, who share the same religion.

Islam, militant or not, is fundamentally incongruous with democracy.

Islamists are militant toward no-Muslims for the sheer fact that they exist.

Would I, should we support a leader / dictator that would subdue the militant Islam?

    Absolutely!

It is a matter what’s best for the US and the West in general. Indeed, it is a matter of existentialism.
