My appliance repairman told me today that he’s been told that all the things he orders to make repairs is going up 25%. He’ll have to raise prices to his customers because he wants to be able to stay in business.
When the tariffs are dropped, you can bet that the prices raised because of the tariffs won’t revert to what they were. They may drop a bit, but they’ll stay higher than they were before the tariffs hit. The American consumer takes another hit.
But raising tariffs and ignoring China China has been forced to raise their tariffs in response which means all of Trump’s products made in China will be under the tariffs too.*
What I do not understand is that after NAFTA was shoved down our throats in the early ’90’s, and after a few years, businesses realized that moving jobs to Mexico was not going to be profitable, manufacturers, AMERICAN manufacturers, began to outsource jobs to Asia and eastern Europe. It was AMERICAN business owners and investors who initiated the great emigration of jobs to China. Why does Chump, (I mean Trump) want to punish China for what American businesses did? Does he think that simply raising tariffs will make AMERICAN businesses suddenly shift those jobs back here? Or is Trump simply grandstanding for his sheep?
