Are your legs broken, kid?
If one has a cable box, switching the channel on the TV would mess everything up. Rather than saying the remote doesn’t work, the kid would get a better response if he said the cable was out.

When I was a kid I was the remote.
I have TVs now that don’t have any buttons on them at all – they HAVE to be turned on by remote :-(
Well, this is a role reversal. Usually you need a kid around to show you how to work your tech. Not me mind you.
Is the TV plugged in?
My TV wasn’t working a few months back. Turned out my cat had walked behind the TV’s cabinet and had accidentally unplugged the power strip.
