Yup – nothing to do the whole summer. Just sleep in, lounge around, munch on the goodies, talk on phone, mosey to your friend’s houses to say hello in person, gossip, and today’s version, of course, tv binge and videogame binge then there’s the cellphone…texting and browsing. Repeat each day until you return to school 2 months later. I hear that all the time when I ask my students what they did the whole summer. Mostly nothing.

I can relate to that. I was in grammar school back in the ’50s. That could have been me.

Almost every kid goes through this ‘end-of-school ritual. They decompress for the next day or two….then are bored silly. Just ignore the antics and help them discover what they are good at re: earning money. The more they learn about ’money’ the better adults they will most likely become. That said, they could still benefit greatly by helping other kids who are having a harder time learning. MAybe Mikecould become a camp counsellor at a summer camp for younger children.

In my day, we never had to ask that question. After sleep late came grass cutting, special projects, vacation Bible school, going to the beach, and laying back and spending the night with cousins.

Yeah, that’s one of the problems with freedom: You have to make decisions for yourself.

My best Summer holiday of all time started in April one year when my older sister got measles and I was quarantined for two weeks after her spots disappeared. Just before I was to get off quarantine my younger sister got sick. The process was repeated when my little brother did something constructive for the first time in his life and got sick also. Somehow I never got measles. When I finally had to return to school, it was the last day of school before Summer holidays officially started and no work got done anyway. WONDERFUL!!

When I was a kid in school-all grades, I NEVER asked that question. I knew a summer adventure was underway when the bell struck 3:00 pm.
