Growing up we had a chicken house with some boxes for the chickens to build their nests. The chickens were free to walk all over the yard without a fence but they almost always used the nests to lay their eggs. We did not have to look for eggs. One my Grandfather heard the chickens making all kinds of fuss so he went out to check on them. He found an alligator was in the chicken house trying to eat the chickens. The workers on our farm had a feast of alligator meat the next day. This was many years ago before it was illegal to kill alligators.
