p.s. During peak TMNT there were parodies, including Pre-Teen Dirty-Gene Kung-Fu Kangaroos. I enjoyed the irony of a parody of a comic that was itself a parody.

In some versions, they were tortoises before being mutated but in the original comic book, they were terrapins with webbed toes vs the fins of true turtles.

However the “tortoise”, “terrapin”, “turtle” distinction has not been fully accepted by herpetologists (people who study reptiles) and most still use the generic “turtle” to represent all members of the order of Chelonia.

And that is correct. TMNT for Teenage Mutant Ninja Tortoises.

Actually, they’re all tortoises. A “turtle” is a bird. (That was the only meaning for “turtle” that Shakespeare knew.) For some unknown reason, English speakers confused the English word “turtle” (bird) with the French word “tortue” (tortoise).

Well, there goes my childhood.

I always loved the Turtles growing up, and I suppose I could live to learn with this name change. Won’t be easy, though … ha.
