Intelligence is no substitute for wisdom. Some individuals do learn and change the direction of their own lives. It’s each new generation that has to make a royal mess of things, usually because they don’t take the time to study the outcome of similar (especially historical) circumstances or disregard the outcome achieved by those who went before.
