Some bribes are more legal than other bribes. Bribe the school directly with a donation to the Endowment or Building Fund, take a tax deduction and your kid matriculates. Bribe the sailing coach to tell the admissions office your landlubber child is a gifted 470 crewman, your child matriculate, but don’t try to deduct that payment. Besides the school is pissed because they thought all the money should go to them – thus the crime. Just make sure your bribes are legal – if you have the money.
According to what I saw on the TV Snooze yesterday, the path the cheaters took was the less straight-forward one. I kinda like being in the hard-science side of things: Any decent school is able to give you a great education, and the folks who hire you care about skills not connections. Add to this that “any decent school” is, while expensive, not exorbitant (by Ivy League standards), so the pay off is better.
Both Presidents Bush “acquired” their College degrees the “old fashioned” way, through family connections – this is legal, though not necessarily ethical. Donnie John was evidently matriculated the “nouveau riche” way, having Mommy and daddy buy it. Neither is essentially proper, it’s just that one is acceptable and one isn’t.
Also note that Donnie John’s parents did this LONG before the current crop of “illegal” matriculators were even born, so the evil is not new, it’s just handled more clumsily, now.

Another case of “it’s who you know, not what you know.”
