I used to get sick after every family gathering from the kids. They were germ factories.

Kids are contagious and old folks are susceptible.

I haven’t been sick since I retired – despite being around family with all the little kids. I think it was work that made me sick!

Mothers [and former mothers] seem to have a natural immunity. They can treat the afflicted without getting afflicted themselves.

Kids spread germs, Ben is correct in taking precautions. I absolutely hate it when parents bring sick kids out in public with excuses like "Well, I figured you already had measles (or whatever aliment the kid has) so I didn’t think it would be a problem. No, you idiot, not every adult has had every childhood disease and it it much worse to get such diseases as adults. Keep your sick kid at home. Ben needs to take care of his health first.

It is a fact that young children are both germ factories but also trade them freely between themselves. Mostly colds and flu’s which mutate a lot so you have a bit of revolving door. My personal best was fourth grade, when I missed more days then I was present. In the one instant I had just gotten over either the mumps or the measles, went to school ONE DAY, and came home that evening with the other one.
