Also on this day in history, April 21, 1836, Texas won her independence from Mexico in the Battle of San Jacinto.

Early that morning General Sam Houston sends his scout, Deaf Smith (pronounced Deef), to burn down Vince’s Bridge, 8 miles upstream at Harrisburg, to eliminate the only escape route for the Mexican Army. Around 9 AM General Martin Perfecto de Cos arrives with 650 reinforcements. But Cos’ men are tired and hungry from the long march, and nearly all of them are raw recruits. Santa Anna orders Cos to station his men along with his own, expecting the Texian army to attack at any moment. They wait and wait, but no attack comes. With Urrea and his army still at Victoria and Gaona stalled at Fort Bend, Santa Anna is still confident of victory, outnumbering the Texians 1,350 to 800.

Around 3:00 in the afternoon, Santa Anna allows Cos to tell his men to rest. Some of Santa Anna’s own men relax their guard as well. Santa Anna retires to his tent to spend time with his reluctant mistress, Emily West. Her ability to cause his distraction at the crucial moment earns her a place in history as the Yellow Rose of Texas.

Houston arranges his men in position, with the Twin Sisters in the center of the formation. At 4:30 that afternoon, he yells, “Remember the Alamo!” and the Sisters bellow their angry roar as 800 screaming mad Texians begin their charge across the empty field, yelling “Remember the Alamo!” and “Remember Goliad!”

The Mexican army is caught completely off guard. The officers scramble to bring their men back into position, yelling conflicting orders. The Texians, armed with single shot rifles and muskets, fire a single volley as they near the front line of Mexican defense. Having taken the makeshift battlements, they continue on, in hand-to-hand combat. Santa Anna emerges from his tent, only half dressed, struggling to pull his uniform on. Houston’s horse is shot out from under him. He scrambles to grab a second horse and continues on. He is shot in the leg and falls to the ground. The Texians continue their vengeful attack. The Mexican soldiers turn and flee. In 18 minutes, the battle is won.

It was all over except for the killing. Houston and Rusk try to stop the Texians from needlessly slaughtering the retreating Mexicans, to no avail. The Texians are filled with too much pent-up anger and blood-lust to stop. Those that have bayonets make excellent use of them. Those without bayonets turn their guns around and hold them by the barrel to use them as clubs to bash the enemy’s heads in. The Texians pursue the Mexicans into the marsh, the bayou, and the river, bashing their brains out with unbridled fury and malice in their frenzied efforts of hateful revenge for the massacres at the Alamo and Goliad. Many of the Mexican soldiers fall to their knees and plead, “Me no Alamo!” and “Me no Goliad!” but the enraged Texians press on. Eye witnesses say that the river ran red with blood.

Hours pass. At nightfall the exhausted Texians return to their camp. 650 Mexican soldiers are dead. An additional 300 have been captured, with 208 of them suffering from various wounds. The Texians count their losses. 9 men have been killed, and 30 are wounded, including General Houston. Two of the wounded men die from their wounds in the next several days. As the Texian army beds down for the night, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna is unaccounted for.

    Happy Resurrection Day Vagabonds

Just returned from the hill and then breakfast at church. I’m a little stuffed.

The Resurrection Celebration is all 10:00 then we’ll have our Easter dinner later on.

May the Lord bless thee and keep thee, may the Lord lift up his fatherly face upon thee and give thee peace.

    Good Easter morning, Vagabonds,

I love all your messages of hope and love on this rainy Easter morning. I thank God for this wonderful Vagabond family.

Our younger daughter and her marvelous family will be flying up to visit in about 5 weeks. Can’t wait till I get to hold and squeeze the baby and 2 year old. Daddy had to go back to work from his paternity leave. Lana has until the end of August before she starts the rat race again. (glad to be retired!)

    xoxoxo Happy Trails

Good morning again Vagabonds and Happy Easter!

    He is risen, indeed!

Great service this morning. The message was a journey with Peter from being a fisherman to the leader of the early church, including his frequent faux pas and his wholehearted acceptance of Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the Living God”.

Our pastor’s wife makes hot cross buns that we serve after the service every Easter. She is such a fabulous cook, and both her husband and her sister said how wonderful their house smelled all day yesterday.

Our family celebration is just the two of us, but we try to do it up right anyway. I went to Marie Callender’s yesterday and bought both a quiche and a fresh strawberry pie for today.

It is currently 78 outside and not expected to get much warmer. A beautiful day for Easter indeed.

    Everyone have a blessed day.
