My mother used to call that “occupational therapy.”

Parents had a business so as a teenager I spent Saturdays cleaning the house.

Young (and not so young) folks need to feel needed and wanted. Helping with domestic and/or yard work gives them a sense of both while adding to their skills and self esteem. As far as rewarding them, an allowance might be in order or a family fun night. Parents who allow their children to do only they want are doing them no favors.

Does she want them to expend energy doing the chores, or running away from her??

Just telling them that stuff NEEDS to be cleaned doesn’t mean they’re going to do it. Ha! What do kids care?
