Actually, all praise to Montana: thanks to Montanan William Clark, a.k.a. the Copper King, we have the 17th amendment, which took the election of US senators away from state legislatures. There had been all sorts of problems with that arrangement, but then Clark was found to have nakedly bribed his way into the senate (such things had been surmised previously, but in Clark’s case it was right out in the open). Without the 17th, the US senate would now be as thoroughly gummed up with gerrymandering as the house is.
Oh, and “conservatives” are keen to repeal the 17th. I wonder why.
Of all DJT’s appointments, Zinke is really the most disappointing. I would expect a former Navy Seal to have a conservative viewpoint, but I would also have expected the Code of Honor he adhered to in his military career would have carried over into his private life.
When he was in the Navy, he got caught making a false claim for reimbursement. The ONLY reason he wasn’t court-martialed was the shortage of SEALs. Instead, he was given a reprimand and very negative Fitness Report which guaranteed that he would never have a command of his, nor ever make Captain.
