A few years back ago, our cat caught a bat and brought it into the house, where it got loose and flew into the Christmas tree, where it hung upside down. Well, you can imagine how that went over with my wife. I thought she beat the thing to death with a broom, but when I picked it up to throw it out, it was alive enough tp bite my right index finger. I called my company medical hotline, and they said get to the nearest emergency room now!! So I went to the hospital and started the first of what was going to be about a jillion of injections, starting with my fingertip. OUCH!!! Then up my arm, turn over and drop your boxers, there are buttocks there we can stick needles, and down the back of my legs. one of the nurses said to me: “You are really lucky, this used to be really painful.” I told her she was doing a pretty good job of causing pain right now, thank you very much. She told me I could go for several years without worrying about getting rabies. I told her I had gone for fifty years without worrying about rabies. The cat got one shot at the vet that protected her. I got about fifty to protect me. Life ain’t fair.
Squirrels are not rabies carriers. They told me to assume all bats have it. I had a long talk with my vet about rabies. He gets a yearly shot just like the cat does, he said.
Hey, aircraft engineer, I was an overhaul mechanic for a major airline in Atlanta at that time, now retired, and we would leave the hangar doors open in the summer. On the midnight shift, we had bugs attracted by the lights, and the bugs attracted bats. It was a HUGE hanger, so we had many bats flying around us chasing bugs. Oddly enough, we ignored them and they ignored us. If you know airplanes, overhauling an airplane gives you enough problems that a few bats can be ignored.
