    Flip side – I remember once watching a funny American movie in a Paris theater with French subtitles. I got the jokes about 15 seconds before the rest of the audience

    I’m with her. Difficult to tell when there is a language barrier and the facial expressions appear to be cut in stone.

    Laugh tracks are similar to the flashy ads: they encourage you to copy the sound even when, if you saw it in real life, you might think it was a waste of time.

    The filmed in front of a live audience laughter also is the same to some degree. The pre-show comedy warm up records audience responses that can then be used in the actual filming as a live laugh track. That, of course, and the flashing applause signs.
