The original butterfly flap was simply a modeling problem. If you had a weather model based on only 100 data points, a goofy reading on 1 point might make the model give extreme results. Since then “chaos theory” seems to be real, in that systems can go off the rails. But the original butterfly flap seems to have morphed into something else.
