Opossums are actually quite remarkable. One of very few South American marsupials to not only survive the rise of Panama and the invasion of the North American placental mammals, but actually expanded into North America – AND survived invasion of humans.
We found a possum in our compost once (just an open wire pen), playing possum. I had to hose him down to get him out. Those critters carry rabies and other bad stuff, and they smell awful. They are nothing like Pogo. I’ve seen a mother carrying a baby in her pouch go through our yard. I gave them a wide berth. Possums are marsupials, you probably know, and they can’t “play” possum. They fall into a coma when threatened, and only their stink protects them from being eaten. So I’m surprised the hose worked.
