    What’s the big deal?

He was a journalist. You know, enemy of the people.

Happens in Russ-e-a all the time and nobody blinks an eye.

Compare and contrast: Saudi Arabia and Iran

Both Muslim, one Sunni, one Shiite. Check

Both restrict civil liberties. Check, but women have more rights in Iran than in Saudi Arabia.

Both theocracies. Check, except Iranian theocrats appear to be believers in their religion, Saudis in it to preserve family power.

One hereditary monarchy, one elected national government. Credit to Iran

Both sitting in oil reserves. Check

Both striving for dominance in Mideast. Check

Now explain to me why the US has decided that the Saudis are our soulmates and the Iranians are our enemies? We supported the Iraqis in the face of Iranian aggression but have done nothing for Yemen or Qatar in the face of Saudi aggression. Maybe the US needs to do a bit of self-examination at this point?

Martens, because the US installed the Shah. Then, we supported Iraq against Iran. Because Saddam was a threat to America and the region. (Oh wait, that part came later.)

And the Bush’s were/are close personal friends and business partners with Saudi royalty. So close that all Saudi officials were hustled out of the country immediately after 9/11 so that our intelligence could not question them.

Letting bygones be bygones is not real big in either country.

“They buy apartments from me. They spend $40 million, $50 million. Am I supposed to dislike them? I like them very much!”

    — Guess who? Hint: Not Bush.
