In the good old days, we would simply rake the piles to the curb, put a bucket of water and a bucket of sand close by,in case of flare ups, ignite the leaves and watch them burn to a nice gray ash, the ash would then go into the compost heap once it cooled.
When I was young we’d rake them to the curb and the city would send a truck wth a big vacuum hose to suck them up. When I was very young we’d just put them in a wire basket and burn them.
