I am so happy to see Rachel remembered. I fell in love with her while reading the first two “early years” anthologies.

Easy to see why he hired her; only two had pleasant expressions and only Rachel was smiling.

How good an income did auto mechanics earn then? How many of them could afford housekeepers or nannies?

In the middle of the applicants who were turned down: Doesn’t the tall one in the middle with the umbrella look a little like John Cleese in drag, ala Monty Python’s Flying Circus?! Plus, she(?) looks NONE too happy!!

Makes me wonder as well: Was there a way early original storyline of GA having Walt interview potential nannies? (If so, likely a way to showcase a lot of unusual characters)!

You can seem strips from the time here:

Walt first put out an ad:

He tried several without success, until Rachel showed up. Yes, some stereotyping typical of the time.
